Fan Prototype: Avatar: the legend of korra - probending
As part of experimentation during my residency with Screen Queensland I wanted to make what I saw as a really engaging sports game that is embellished with the magic martial arts of the world of Avatar: The Legend of Korra
In the Legend of Korra, a fantasy sports game called ‘Probending’ is celebrated by the city-folk of Republic City. This game pits two teams of 3 players, one of each element Fire, Water, and Earth, against each other.
The goal of the game is to use the elemental magic of each ‘bender’ to push back the opponent past marked segments of the arena.
While my prototype took on a couple of iterations through its development, I will need to go back and collect images and gifs of the development. Until I update this page with those images, I’d love to show the final result attained before I stopped working on it to move on to other projects with higher priorities.
This is the simple AI training level. The AI throws random attacks at you in random directions every second or so.
This showcases the system I developed over the course of about 2 months of part-time work on the project. What we see happening is that each player has a 6-segmented ‘aiming’ reticle that determines which direction they will throw a rock attack at their opponent.
This is also the way players ‘block’ incoming attacks by pressing the block button, allowing them approx 1 second of blocking time, in which if an attack comes from that direction, they are not affected by it, and actually regenerate their stamina, shown in yellow over the head of the player.
This system is heavily inspired by the combat system in the game ‘For Honor - 2018’
My prototype includes 1v1 and 2v2 game modes, in which you can aim at either enemy target, allowing for players to gang up on specific opponents.
The beauty of the system is that with a fast enough reaction speed, a player can actually outplay multiple opponents by being quick enough to switch to each incoming attack once the previous attack is blocked.
Once another play test is done, I will get footage to include in this post of multiplayer games to showcase the level of skill that can be achieved even by beginner-level players.
